  • Be able to list some of the every day uses of magnets.
  • Better understand how magnetic fields work.

Create a real comet in the classroom and learn about the objects in our Solar System such as planets, moons, asteroids and more.
 
Hold real life meteorites in your hand, and examine the differences between them.

By the end of the presentation and Comet Lab, students will:

  • Be able to name objects in the Solar System.
  • Understand the differences between the Sun and the planets.
  • Know the order of the planets, and the difference between terrestrial planets and gas giants.
  • Know that  man-made satellites orbit the Earth and have many uses such as GPS, weather monitoring and science (in the case of the ISS).
  • Know where shooting stars come from.
  • Understand what comets are made of, how they form and why they might be important for understanding life on Earth.

Learn about the planets, moons, asteroids and more in our Solar System.

Create a scale model of the Solar System and learn how to create one at home.

  • Gain a better understanding of the Solar System, its size, scale and inhabitants.
  • Be able to tell the difference between a star and a planet.
  • Be able to name all of the planets and an interesting fact about each.
  • Create a scale model of the Solar System.

Learn about the Earth, Moon and Sun system and their motions relative to each other.

Describe the seasons, tides, lunar phases and eclipses as well as day and night.

  • Gain an appreciation of the Earth-Sun-Moon system.
  • Understand why solar and lunar eclipses happen.
  • Be able to define terms such as ‘planet’, ‘moon’ and ‘satellite’.

Learn about some of the most mysterious objects in nature.

Understand the life cycles of stars and how their mass affects their deaths.

By the end of this workshop, students will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the life cycles of stars – from chemistry and physics to the timescales involved.
  • Have an insight into what a black hole is, how it is formed, and the strange observations that can be made around it.
  • Understand accretion discs and singularities, and the various sizes of black hole, from miniature to supermassive.
  • Use augmented reality to explore galaxy/black hole phenomena.
