Immersive Experiences have been developing memorable workshops for years. Our Hands on Science workshops are available both virtually and in-person for both schools and private party bookings.
The Solar System
The Solar System is what we call the Sun and everything which orbits it.
The Solar System contains 8 planets, 5 dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and at least thousands of known asteroids and comets.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System – big enough to fit the Earth in 1,000 times.
The Solar System formed from a cloud of gas and dust about 4.6 billion years ago!

Key Stage 1-2 Workshop
Learn about the Sun, planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets and more.
Create a scale model of the Solar System.
Learn interesting facts about each of the planets in the Solar System.
The workshop begins with an introduction to the planets, describing basic facts about each (15 minutes).
Practical: After learning about the planets in the Solar System, students will create their own scale model. This can be done in the classroom or a large space such as a school hall or sports field (20 minutes).
The workshop will end with a short summary of what has been learned followed by plenty of time for questions about the Solar System and space (10 minutes).
After the session, students will receive a quiz, with instructions on how to create their own scale Solar System anywhere.
By the end of this workshop, students will:
- Gain a better understanding of the Solar System, its size, scale and inhabitants.
- Be able to tell the difference between a star and a planet.
- Be able to name all of the planets and an interesting fact about each.
- Create a scale model of the Solar System.
Key Stage 3 – 4 Workshop
Learn about the Sun, planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets and more.
Understand the scale of the Solar System – and reference other stars.
Explore astronomical distances – to Andromeda and beyond!
The workshop begins with an introduction to the planets and dwarf planets, with a more in-depth look at the scale of the Solar System, with reference to other stars (15 minutes).
Practical: After learning about the planets in the Solar System, students will use a Solar System Scale Model Calculator to visualise the trade-off between distance and size (15 minutes).
Keeping with the theme of distances, students will explore distances in the Universe – to Andromeda and beyond! (10 minutes)
The workshop will end with a short summary of what has been learned followed by time for questions about the Solar System and space (5 minutes).
By the end of this workshop, students will:
- Gain a better understanding of the Solar System, its size, scale and inhabitants.
- Be able to tell the difference between a star and a planet.
- Be able to name all of the planets and dwarf planets an interesting fact about each.
- Gain a better understanding of the scale of astronomical distances in the Universe.
