Immersive Experiences have been developing memorable workshops for years. Our Hands on Science workshops are available both virtually and in-person for both schools and private party bookings.
The Earth, Sun and Moon
The Earth travels around the Sun in an orbit once per year and the Moon orbits the Earth every 28 days.
The Moon’s gravity causes tides on Earth and its position in the sky along with the Sun makes it appear to change shape.
Occasionally, the Moon and the Earth pass through each others shadow – creating spectacular eclipses.

Earth, Moon and Space Workshop
Learn how the Earth, Moon and Sun move in relation to each other, and how it looks to our eyes in the night sky.
Understand how the tides, seasons and eclipses are related to the Earth-Sun-Moon system.
Define the terms ‘moon’, ‘satellite’ and ‘planet’.
The workshop will begin with an introduction to the Solar System – discussing briefly each planet (10 minutes).
Next the concept of day and night will be recapped, exploring the Earth’s rotation and what a planet’s axis is (5 minutes).
After exploring the concept of axis, the discussion will expand on how the Earth’s seasons come to be (5 minutes).
Next, the moons of the Solar System will be discussed, with a particular focus on what makes ours special (10 minutes).
Having introduced the Moon, the causes of eclipses and tides are then expanded upon (10 minutes).
Finally, the session will finish with a summary of the workshop and time for space questions (5 minutes).
By the end of this workshop, students will:
- Gain an appreciation of the Earth-Sun-Moon system.
- Understand why solar and lunar eclipses happen.
- Be able to define terms such as ‘planet’, ‘moon’ and ‘satellite’.
The workshop can be adapted for all ages. Please contact us for more information.
