Solar System KS 1-4

Learning outcomes

Students will gain a better understanding of the Solar System, its size, scale and inhabitants with this practical workshop.

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to tell the difference between a star and a planet, name all the planets and an interesting fact about each, as well as have made a scale model of the solar system.

After the session, a quiz will be handed out, with instructions on how to make their own scale system anywhere.

Timetable KS 1-2

  • Introduction to the planets and a bit about each (15 mins)
  • Practical: making a scale model in the classroom or in a large space (e.g. sports field) (20 mins)
  • Conclusion and questions (10 mins)

Timetable KS 3-4

  • Introduction to the planets and dwarf planets, and more in-depth look at the scale of the solar system, with reference to other stars (15 minutes)
  • Practical: trade-off between scaling distance vs size, by using a Solar System Scale Model Calculator to understand the numbers in the solar system (15 mins)
  • Exploration of distances in the universe, up to Andromeda and beyond (10 mins)
  • Conclusion and questions (5 mins)

Earth, Moon & Space KS 1-2

Learning outcomes

Students will gain an appreciation of the Sun – Earth – Moon system, including why eclipses and seasons happen

Covers the definitions of moon, satellite and planet

Timetable KS 1-2

  • Introduction to the Solar system, and each planet (10 mins)

  • Recap of day and night, exploring what a planet’s axis is (5 mins)

  • Extension to seasons, how they have come to be (5 mins)

  • Moons of the solar system and what makes ours special (10 mins)

  • Eclipses and tides (10 mins)

  • Conclusions and questions (5 mins)

Stand on a Black Hole KS 3-4


Overview

Learning outcomes

Students will gain a deeper understanding of the life cycle of stars, from the chemistry and physics to the timescales involved.

Students will have an insight into what a black hole is, how it is formed, and the strange observations that could be made around it. They will understand accretion discs and singularities, and the various sizes of black hole, from miniature to supermassive.

Using AR devices to explore galaxy/black hole phenomena.

Timetable KS 3-4

  • Introduction to gravity and how it powers stars (10 mins)

    Life cycles of stars, main sequence, comparison of various stars (15 mins)

    Black holes (15 mins)

    Conclusion and questions (5 mins)
